Auchan Romania encourages packaging recycling

Alina Oprea
In continuation of its sustainability actions and to encourage responsible behavior among consumers, Auchan has set up collection points in the parking lots of its stores or within their premises where customers can recycle three types of packaging: PETs, aluminium cans and bottles from glass. For each packaging recycled until May 31, 2023, customers will be rewarded with a voucher worth RON0.5 (€0.1) granted exclusively on the basis of the MyCLUB Auchan loyalty card. Customers are encouraged to bring their packaging to Auchan starting on April 18, after the Easter holidays, and for their active contribution to reducing packaging pollution, they will be rewarded with loyalty vouchers.

Recycling points are already available in 37 stores, more precisely in 25 Auchan hypermarkets, 5 Auchan supermarkets, and 7 MyAuchan convenience stores in Bucharest and in the country, as follows: Timișoara (Iulius Mall, Nord, Calea Șagului, Buziașului), Craiova (Electroputere, Craiovița, Universitaria), Constanta, Brașov, Pitesti Găvana, Bacău, Baia Mare, Satu Mare, Târgu Mureș, Oradea, Cluj, Galați and Ploiesti. Installations of devices for selective collection of RVM (reverse vending machine) type also continue in the other stores in the coming period.

"In preparation for the guarantee-return system that will come into force nationally in the future, Auchan is supporting customers to offer them a new collection and recycling solution, through automatic RVM machines that are and will be installed in our stores. We thus create a very good opportunity for as many citizens as possible to test and get used to such a system for the systematic recycling of beverage packaging", said Corina Dospinoiu, Auchan Retail Romania Sustainability Director.

The steps in the packaging recycling process are:

1. Scan the MyCLUB Auchan loyalty card at the recycling machine

2. Insert the container through the round slot (empty PET-type containers can have a maximum capacity of 3L, and those made of glass and aluminum (cans) of a maximum of 1L).

To be accepted, the containers must be empty, clean, and undamaged, and they can be inserted, one at a time, in random order, with the machine automatically identifying the type of each packaging inserted.

3. After completing the transaction, the user will receive a voucher on the MyCLUB loyalty card whose total value will be calculated according to the number of recycled packaging. This voucher can be found and viewed in the Auchan app.

Until May 31, the recycling of each piece of packaging will be rewarded with a voucher worth RON0.5 (€0.1). The benefit is only granted with the MyCLUB card within the limit of 20 packaging/recycling sessions and 10 card sessions/day (ie a maximum of 200 packaging/card per day). After the 20th packaging has been accepted, the device automatically completes the session and issues a non-value ticket on which the number of recycled packaging and their type is mentioned. The loyalty voucher, issued in the Auchan application, can be used in Auchan and MyAuchan stores, with the exception of stores located in Petrom stations, after prior scanning of the loyalty card.

Auchan Romania has 362 stores in its portfolio, including 33 hypermarkets, 6 supermarkets, and 323 ultra-proximity MyAuchan stores, of which over 300 are in Petrom stations, as well as the online store auchan.ro.

Auchan Romania carries out a series of important actions to promote social responsibility activities and the integration of young people, as well as programs to protect the environment aimed at managing waste, saving resources, etc. Among the projects that the company carried out are the planting of 100,000 trees through the Mobilizatron project, the production of the film "Untamed Romania", the first documentary about Romania's nature, as well as the setting up of two medical support units for patients with non-critical forms of Covid- 19.
