Electrocentrale București (ELCEN) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sage Geosystems Incorporated, a US-based company specializing in geothermal energy technology and storage.
This MoU aims to conduct a feasibility study for implementing geothermal resource utilization technologies in Bucharest's district heating system.
Under this agreement, ELCEN will provide access to relevant data and infrastructure, and contribute technical expertise and operational knowledge specific to Bucharest's centralized heating system. Sage Geosystems will conduct the technical and geological analyses and feasibility study on geothermal energy utilization.
On February 7, 2024, ELCEN and the US Department of Energy (DoE) signed an agreement in Washington to identify geothermal investment projects and conduct a feasibility study for Bucharest's district heating system. Following this, the DoE proposed collaboration with Sage Geosystems, which led to the drafting and signing of the MoU on July 23, 2024, after its approval by the Romanian Government on July 18, 2024.
