ENGIE Romania completes first hybrid plant

ENGIE Romania has expanded its renewable energy portfolio by completing its first hybrid plant, combining wind and solar power, with a total installed capacity of 57 MW.

Located in Gemenele, Brăila County, the plant will generate approximately 140 GWh annually, enough to power over 46,800 households.

This project boosts ENGIE Group's total wind and solar capacity in Romania to 211 MW. The hybrid plant became operational following the completion of a new 9.3 MWp photovoltaic park, developed by ENGIE over the past year. The park, situated on a 14-hectare site adjacent to ENGIE's existing wind farm in Gemenele, includes 17,100 bi-facial solar panels mounted on metal trackers to optimize energy production by following the sun's path.

The new solar park, along with the 47.5 MW wind farm, connects to the same network, creating one of Romania's first hybrid renewable energy plants.

"We are proud to launch our first hybrid power plant. This investment allows us to provide our customers with renewable electricity and offer medium to long-term purchase contracts, supporting their carbon reduction goals and ensuring predictable energy costs," said Cristian Buzan, Deputy General Director of ENGIE Romania.

ENGIE Romania now operates three wind farms with a total capacity of 178 MW across Brăila, Constanța, and Galați counties, along with five photovoltaic parks totaling 33 MW in Arad, Buzău, Harghita, and Teleorman counties. In 2023, ENGIE also began construction on a new greenfield solar power plant in Ariceștii Rahtivani, Prahova County, with a capacity of 37.2 MWp.
