Nokian Tyres secured CO2 emission-free energy for its new tire factory in Romania through a contract with renewable energy provider Enery, supporting Europe's green transition, according to a statement from the tire manufacturer.

"Nokian Tyres and Enery have signed a long-term agreement guaranteeing the supply of CO2 emission-free energy for the new passenger car tire factory in Oradea, Romania. Moreover, this contract enables Enery to build a new solar power plant in southern Romania," the statement says.

The contract will take effect in 2025 and will last for 11 years. The new factory in Oradea will operate entirely without fossil fuels, becoming the world's first large-scale, CO2 emission-free tire factory. Commercial production is set to begin in early 2025, the manufacturer adds.

"The agreement with Enery not only ensures the supply of CO2 emission-free energy for our new factory in Oradea, Romania, but also includes the construction of a new solar power plant in Romania, further supporting Europe's green transition. The agreement also aligns with our long-term goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050," said Adrian Kaczmarczyk, SVP for Operation Excellence at Nokian Tyres.

"This collaboration with Nokian Tyres underscores our mission to make a significant environmental impact through responsible energy practices, while also contributing to Romania's energy independence and sustainable future," said Severin Vartigov, Chief Commercial Officer at Enery. "Together, we are committed to reducing carbon emissions and promoting a cleaner energy future," he added.

Enery is an independent renewable energy provider specializing in long-term green energy supply, with a portfolio of 490 MW. The company's plans include projects totaling over 8 GW across 11 countries.

Nokian Tyres produces premium tires for cars, trucks, and heavy machinery. The group has approximately 3,400 employees and reported net sales of €1.2 billion in 2023. Nokian Tyres is listed on Nasdaq Helsinki.
