Romania was among the EU states with a high share of renewable energy sources, in 2022. The share of renewable energy sources in gross electricity consumption at the EU level reached 23% last year, an increase of 1.1 percentage points (pp) compared to 2021, according to the European Statistical Office (Eurostat) data. 17 of the 27 EU member states reported shares below the EU average of 23% last year.
Among EU member states, the highest share of renewable energy sources in gross electricity consumption in 2022 was recorded in Sweden (66%), Finland (47.9%), Latvia (43.3%), Denmark (41.6%), Estonia (38.5%), Portugal (34.7%), Austria (33.8%), Lithuania (29.6%), Croatia (29.35%) and Romania (24.14 %). At the opposite pole are Ireland (13.1%), Malta (13.4%), Belgium (13.8%) and Luxembourg (14.4%).
The revised directive on renewable energy establishes for the EU a share of 42.5% of energy from renewable sources for the year 2030 (the objective being an increase to 45%).
Therefore, the member states must intensify their efforts to meet the objectives for 2030, as it is necessary to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the gross electricity consumption at the EU level by almost 20 percentage points.
