The Bulgarian Ministry of Energy has approved €268 million in state aid for 249 renewable energy projects, including energy storage units. These projects were selected under two funding rounds of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

The Bulgarian government aims to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy sources, address grid congestion, and enhance the country's energy security. By investing in energy storage technologies, Bulgaria seeks to integrate higher levels of renewable energy into its power system.

The first round of funding, worth approximately €54 million, will support 200 smaller-scale renewable energy and energy storage projects ranging from 200 kW to 2 MW. The second round, with a budget of approximately €472 million, will fund larger-scale projects with a capacity of over 200 kW.

The ministry aims to expedite the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid, address grid congestion, and improve system balancing. All projects must be completed by March 31, 2026.
