Romanian prosumers expand rapidly

Romania's prosumer sector is booming, with installed capacity reaching 2.44 GW at the end of January—an impressive 63% increase compared to the same time last year.

The number of prosumers has surged to 203,984, marking a 79% rise in just 12 months, and this upward trend is expected to continue as new rounds of government funding are prepared.

This growth once again underscores the pivotal role prosumers play in Romania's shift toward a cleaner energy system. Backed by substantial financial incentives—many sourced from European Union funding—households, small businesses, and institutions have increasingly adopted photovoltaic systems. For context, in 2019 there were only 303 registered prosumers.

According to data from Romania's National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE), prosumers now represent more than half of the country's total solar capacity. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) estimates that Romania added 57% more solar power last year, pushing the national total to 4.7 GW.
