The Chiajna landfill was permanently closed, after approximately 22 years of operation. The Iridex Group company announces that the Chiajna Waste Landfill - an objective of the Bucharest City Hall, operated by Iridex Group SRL, has been sealed off and closed definitively, in its entirety. Currently, the post-closure monitoring activity is carried out, by the legislation in the field, for at least 30 years.
The first cells to reach storage capacity, cells 1-5, were permanently closed in December 2017, and cells 6-7 were permanently closed this week.
"Thus, after approximately 22 years of operation, the Warehouse is closed, sealed, and ensures full security in terms of environmental protection and the health of the population. High-performance installations ensure the control of environmental factors, so that the area is clean, without adverse impact on the environment and citizens", the company announces.
The warehouse was established in 1999, when Bucharest was a city full of waste, following an international public tender procedure, which was won by Iridex Group SRL.
The landfill together with the other adjacent facilities constituted an Integrated Waste Management Center, with activities that represent the links of the circular economy - composting, sorting, treatment of construction waste, etc.
"Over the years, the Chiajna landfill has contributed to the promotion of new technological solutions and the development of advanced waste management methods. Its work has served as a reference point even for environmental authorities such as GNM (National Environmental Guard) and APM (Agency for Environmental Protection), which have adopted innovative technologies and implemented new practices in the field of waste management, influencing the progress in this sector in a positive way", says the company.
