Between December 2023 and November 2024, a total of 2.68 billion "SGR" packaging units were processed at recycling stations, representing 88% of the collected materials, announced RetuRO, the system's administrator.
More than three billion "SGR" packaging units were collected in the first year since the launch of the Deposit Return System (SGR), with a collection rate of 76% in November.
The Deposit Return System (SGR) celebrated its one-year anniversary in November 2024.
RetuRO, the SGR administrator, operates on a not-for-profit basis, meaning any profits generated from the collection of beverage packaging are reinvested entirely into the system's development. The company was created by a consortium of three private shareholders: the Romanian Brewers Association for the Environment (30%), the Association of Soft Drink Manufacturers for Sustainability (30%), and the Retailers Association for the Environment (20%), along with a public shareholder, the Romanian government, through the Ministry of Environment, Waters, and Forests (20%).
RetuRO is privately funded and works to ensure transparency in the quantities of beverage packaging placed on the market and returned by consumers, contributing to Romania's sustainable development by managing packaging waste responsibly and helping the country meet the EU's recycling targets.
