The Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), the EU's regional body, announced that it is granting Albania €2.6 million to develop a 12.9 MW floating solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant at the Vau i Dejes hydropower plant (HPP) reservoir.
The total investment for this project in northwestern Albania is valued at €12 million, with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) leading the financing through a €7.48 million loan.
The Albanian government will contribute approximately €1.9 million.
Expected to generate 18 GWh of electricity annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 8,700 tonnes per year, the PV plant marks the first application of pure-float technology in the Western Balkans. This innovative approach involves installing floating solar panels directly on the water surface without additional structures.
The project is slated for completion by 2025.
