United Group invests €120 million in Bulgarian renewable energy

Green Forum
United Group, a telecommunications and media company based in Southeastern Europe, has made a major investment of €120 million ($124.6 million) to expand its green energy initiatives in Bulgaria. This move marks a significant step toward the company's renewable energy goals.

The investment is set to generate 160% of the electricity needed for United Group's operations in Bulgaria, with plans to meet 65% of its total energy consumption by 2027. Additionally, the projects will help reduce CO₂ emissions by 120,000 tons annually, supporting Bulgaria's transition to greener energy sources.

Victoriya Boklag, CEO of United Group, emphasized the company's commitment to sustainability, stating, “This investment goes beyond business—it's a promise to future generations. By harnessing the power of the sun and wind, we're not only powering our operations but driving positive change. United Group is proud to lead in the production of green electricity, paving the way for a brighter and more sustainable future for both Bulgaria and Southeastern Europe.”

The funds will be used to develop three solar power plants and a wind farm, with a combined capacity of 124 MW. Together, these projects will generate 310,000 megawatt hours of clean energy each year, enough to power over 60,000 households. A state-of-the-art battery storage system will also be included, capable of storing up to 1.5 times the peak energy production.

Since its entry into Bulgaria in 2020, United Group has invested €2.5 billion ($2.59 billion) in cutting-edge technologies, such as the country's first 10 GIGA optical network, its largest 5G network, and the first unlimited 5G mobile plans. The first solar plant, located near Stara Zagora, is already operational, with additional plants planned near Kyustendil and Vidin. The wind farm in northeast Bulgaria is also set to raise the bar for innovation and efficiency.

All projects are designed with sustainability in mind, utilizing industrial land and advanced energy storage solutions to minimize ecological impact. This investment underscores United Group's role in driving transformation, aligning with the European Union's climate goals and supporting Bulgaria's green energy transition. The company aims to achieve net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2040, reinforcing its leadership in sustainability.
