OMV Petrom, the largest integrated energy company in Southeast Europe, continues the "Romania plants for tomorrow" project and focuses its attention in 2023 on urban areas. Thus, the company is supporting this year's plantings with €3 million and over 330,000 saplings will be planted in mini-urban forests in 20 cities, including Bucharest, Constanța, Giurgiu and Craiova. Launched in 2020, "Romania plants for tomorrow" is the largest planting initiative financed by private funds in Romania. In the period 2020-2022, more than 10,000 volunteers reforested more than 450 hectares, within 60 plantings, with a contribution of €5.7 million.
"Every year, through the <<Romania plants for tomorrow>> project, we contribute to the development of greener and cleaner communities. I thank our volunteers, authorities and partners, with whose help we have planted more than 2 million saplings in the past three years. We hope they will join us this year as well, in which we set out to create small green oases in urban communities together. <<Romania plants for tomorrow>> is part of our broader strategy to build a sustainable future for communities and the whole society", says Christina Verchere, CEO of OMV Petrom.
In 2023, the "Romania plants for tomorrow" project will mainly focus on the creation of miniature urban forests. This concept was introduced in Romania by OMV Petrom and was successfully implemented in 5 localities: Moinești, Bucharest, Giurgiu, Buftea and Urziceni. The miniature urban forest has the role of improving air quality, reducing noise, increasing biodiversity and reducing the greenhouse effect.
At the same time, the plantings in the countryside will continue, in the areas that need intervention, with about 180,000 seedlings for extra-village plantings.
The afforestation actions are carried out with the support of six NGOs: Act for Tomorrow, Mai Mult Verde, Plantăm fapte bune in Romania, Pădurea Copiilor, Viitor Plus and the Văcărești Natural Park Association.
On July 29, 2020, OMV Petrom announced its support for the recommendations issued by the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures regarding the risks and opportunities associated with climate change.
