Electrica, a Romanian state-owned utility, has secured a €3.4 million grant from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan to fund a new energy storage project.

This project, located in Fântânele, Mureș County, will involve the construction of battery-based storage units with a total capacity of 69.93 MWh.

The grant, which represents approximately 20% of the project's total cost of €21.8 million, will be used to build the necessary infrastructure, including transformer substations, internal electrical networks, and access roads. The project aims to enhance grid stability and flexibility, particularly as Romania transitions to a more renewable energy-based grid.

This is Electrica's second PNRR-funded project. In October 2023, the company received funding for a 27 MWp solar photovoltaic project, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
