Alstom to supply 40 electric trains to Germany

Alina Oprea
Alstom has signed a contract to supply 40 Coradia Stream high-capacity multiple electric trains to Nahverkehrsverbund Schleswig-Holstein (NAH.SH), the integrated transport association that organizes rail passenger transport in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. The order also includes a complete package of train maintenance services for a period of 30 years. The contract has a value of almost €900 million.

In addition, it includes the option to order up to 55 additional trains with the associated full-service package.

The Coradia Stream regional train is a state-of-the-art electric multiple unit (EMU), with a low floor and high performance. Developed for the European market, the Coradia Stream model is able to work on all the main European power supply systems. In total, more than 1,000 trains based on the Coradia Stream train family have been ordered by Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Romania, and Spain. The train family also offers direct traction solutions without CO2 emissions, such as battery-powered or hydrogen-powered trains for non-electrified lines.

Four-car sets consist of two double-deck end cars and two single-level cars. They are 106 meters long and can operate in multiple tractions. The trains have a maximum speed of 160 km/h and will run in two networks, each with a specific vehicle configuration, with 360 and 390 seats, respectively.

"These railway lines have the largest number of people in Schleswig-Holstein who travel by public transport. We are sending a clear signal in the direction of modernizing transport", says Claus Ruhe Madsen, Minister of Transport in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

The trains have air conditioning systems using antibacterial and antiviral filters, power outlets, and Wi-Fi connection, as well as improved reception of mobile phone services.

The trains offer ample space for pushchairs and large luggage, as well as space for two wheelchairs and up to 24 bicycles. Each train is equipped with three toilets, one of which is accessible to wheelchair users. In addition, each train offers more than 40 seats for passengers with reduced mobility.

Final assembly as well as train testing and commissioning takes place in Salzgitter, Germany. Engineering is carried out in several locations in France under the leadership of the Valenciennes unit.
