EU sees 1.5 million new battery-only electric cars in 2023

In 2023, 1.5 million new battery-only electric passenger cars were registered in the EU, raising the total to 4.5 million, according to Eurostat. This reflects a 48.5% increase compared to 2022, when the total stood at 3.0 million.

Battery-only electric vehicles accounted for 14.6% of new car registrations in 2023, continuing the rapid growth in electric vehicle adoption across the EU.

Until 2018, the share of battery-only electric cars in new registrations was below 1%, but it has surged in recent years: 5.3% in 2020, 9.0% in 2021, 12.1% in 2022, and 14.6% in 2023.

According to data from Eurostat, battery-only electric cars made up 1.7% of all passenger cars in the EU as of December 31, 2023. However, there were significant differences among EU countries. In Denmark, 7.1% of all passenger cars were battery-only electric, while Sweden, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands also reported high shares at 5.9%, 5.1%, and 5.0%, respectively. Conversely, 14 countries recorded shares below 1%, with the lowest proportions found in Cyprus, Greece, and Poland, each at 0.2%.
