Bernd Lange, Chair of the European Parliament's Trade Committee, recently told a German television channel that a deal between the EU's 27 member states and China to replace tariffs with another measure is nearing completion.
Despite this statement, European officials, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the negotiations, refuted the claim, emphasizing that significant obstacles remain in the discussions.
One proposed solution involves establishing minimum prices for imported Chinese electric vehicles to address concerns over their artificially low costs, attributed to Chinese government subsidies.
In response to these subsidies, the EU implemented tariffs of up to 45.3% last month on electric vehicles from China. This action, part of the EU's largest trade investigation to date, has sparked division within Europe and provoked retaliatory actions from Beijing.
