Hungary hits solar power record

Green Forum
Hungary's solar energy production soared to unprecedented level setting a new national record and underscoring the country's accelerating transition toward renewable energy sources.

According to MAVIR, the national electricity system operator, industrial solar power plants generated 3,747 megawatts during a 15-minute interval starting at 11:00 a.m.—the highest value ever recorded.

When combined with electricity generated by household and self-use solar installations, total solar output reached 6,178 megawatts. The Ministry of Energy announced the milestone on its official Facebook page, highlighting the rapid growth of green energy production in the country.

As of early March, Hungary's installed solar power capacity has reached 7,831 megawatts. Tuesday's output marked the first time the national grid utilized more than 6,000 megawatts of solar-generated electricity, demonstrating the tangible impact of recent investments in renewable infrastructure. Industrial solar power plants alone, with a combined capacity of 4,389 megawatts, supplied the equivalent of 84% of the total gross system load during the record period.

Hungary has surpassed its previous renewable energy timeline. The country was originally expected to reach 6,000 megawatts of installed solar capacity by 2030, a goal that was already exceeded in 2023. This rapid development puts Hungary at the forefront of solar energy adoption in Europe.
