Hungary surpasses 2030 solar targets

Green Forum
The Ministry of Energy has announced a significant expansion in Hungary's solar power capacity. Over the past five years, the capacity of domestic industrial solar plants has increased 12-fold, with output doubling in just the last two years.

Hungary has already surpassed its 2030 target of 6,000 megawatts of total solar capacity, as outlined in the National Energy and Climate Plan, prompting a new target of 12 gigawatts.

According to the Hungarian Transmission System Operator Company (MAVIR), solar capacity reached 4,030 megawatts in November 2023—marking a dramatic rise since 2018. Industrial green energy producers exceeded 2,000 megawatts in 2022 and 3,000 megawatts in 2023, with a peak production of 3,346 megawatts recorded in August 2023.

Last year saw the highest-ever annual addition of solar capacity for plants over 50 kilowatts, totaling 776.8 megawatts. This year, the first eleven months alone added 728.5 megawatts, putting 2024 on track to break the annual record.

Including contributions from car manufacturers, the installed capacity of industrial-scale solar plants has reached 4,758 megawatts. Even without factoring in small-scale systems, solar PV installations have already achieved a 1-gigawatt expansion in 2024.
