The funding came from the company's own resources and was partially supported by European non-reimbursable financing under Romania's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
The solar energy produced will supply part of the steelworks' internal power needs, enhancing both sustainability and energy efficiency in its production operations.
“Our focus has always been on minimizing our environmental footprint. With this project, we're advancing sustainable steel production while helping our customers meet their own decarbonization goals,” said Mihaela Popescu, President of Tenaris Eastern Europe, North Sea, and Sub-Saharan Africa. She also noted that Tenaris' steelworks rank among the world's 15 most efficient plants in terms of CO2 emissions.
By incorporating solar power, TenarisSilcotub aims to cut CO2 emissions in line with its 2030 target of a 30% reduction from 2018 levels. This effort complements other green initiatives, including the use of scrap metal and alternative raw materials, which already enable steel production with 98% recycled content.
